MEN’S MATCH REPORTS
Crewe Vagrants 1st X1 5 V 1 Bramhall 1st XI
Comfortable for Vagrants after slow start
Crewe were slow to get into their stride in their friendly away clash with former NHL Div. 2 West rivals Bramhall on Saturday, but grew in confidence as they racked up a string of second half goals, sweeping to what ultimately proved an easy win.
Vagrants pressed hard in the early stages, with useful forays by Dave Holland and Phil Morant and some slick attacking moves from Jon Woodhart, Gary Roberts, Neil Darling and Rob Jepson. Roberts also produced a fine crossfield run, and Simon Trenbirth was unlucky not to score after a neat one-two with Holland. Bramhall began to get more of a grip, however, piercing the Crewe defence with a number of attacking raids and twice going close to scoring. Vagrants in turn had opportunities through Holland, whose fierce shot from Darling’s fine cross was well saved, then Darling himself, just failing to connect with Holland’s pass across goal. Two short corners were also squandered before Trenbirth on 18 minutes finally opened the scoring by converting a third. Crewe might have doubled their lead from another corner three minutes later, but Holland’s shot was well saved, and Bramhall again tested the visitors’ defence with raking forward runs before Holland shot just wide and a further Crewe short corner strike was saved on the line. Keeper Graham Coombs had to make a heroic save as a lone Bramhall attacker raced in to connect with a long aerial pass from midfield, and minutes later Crewe began to look more than a little vulnerable as a home forward missed a golden chance, failing to put away a perfect cross into an empty net. At the other end, the visitors had chances to consolidate their slender lead before the break with a fine cross to Jepson by Tim Alexander, then two more short corners, but Holland’s fierce effort to convert the first was saved and the second attempt resulted in a disallowed goal.
Crewe resumed spiritedly, with a skilful dribble past several players by Woodhart, a fine defensive block from Holland and a lofted shot on goal by Alexander, all in the first minute. Paddy Leese produced two reassuringly composed upfield clearances, and Roberts just failed to score with a shot from the right, but after just five minutes Jepson produced an excellent dribble, crossing the ball for Trenbirth to slot home for 2-0. Bramhall replied with a dangerous break and angled shot, well saved by Coombs, and another fast burst on the left, brilliantly intercepted by Leese. Crewe, however, drove forward again with attacks involving Holland and James Capper, then Woodhart, Capper and Henry Weir, before, on 11 minutes, Jepson took Holland’s pass, made a fast run down the right and crossed for Capper to tap home for 3-0. Crewe were now well in control, with Woodhart making outstanding tackles to break up Bramhall attacks and Weir, Roberts and Leese all clearing well to send play back upfield. On 18 minutes the visitors swept further ahead as Roberts crossed neatly for the waiting Weir to slam the ball into an empty net and make it
4-0. Bramhall came back with two short corners, both defended, and a close-range shot, smothered by Coombs, but then, on 25 minutes, they caught Crewe out with a fierce shot from the top of the ‘D’ which flashed past the keeper to reduce the lead to 4-1. The visitors appeared briefly to be getting careless in defence, losing possession and letting Bramhall cut through the middle, but on 30 minutes, after Weir’s shot from Capper’s cross was blocked, Darling netted from the left as he fell, sending Crewe 5-1 up. With confidence soaring, Vagrants attacked again, with Holland going just wide, and were passing the ball around well in the closing stages. They can be justly proud of a sparkling second half display which enabled them eventually to cruise to a comfortable and fully deserved victory.
